What is rammed earth?

Rammed earth is a natural wall building material, created by compressing a carefully crafted mix of minerals into a form. Through the act of pneumatic compression our crew creates in a few moments what gravity does over thousands of years: rock.

Our rammed earth technique - coupled with modern engineering and building science - makes rammed earth structural, airtight, and heavily insulated enough to exceed Ontario's building code, and succeed through our unpredictable weather.

How Is It Built?

Every rammed earth project begins with a carefully developed mix, created to reflect each client's desired colour palette.

This mix is placed into reusable forms in layers. Using pneumatic tampers, our crew compacts each layer before adding the next, creating the distinctive horizontal striations that make every rammed earth wall unique.

Modern rammed earth homes combine these structural walls with high-performance insulation and carefully engineered building assemblies designed specifically for Ontario's climate.

After curing, the forms are removed to reveal the finished wall. What remains is both the structure of the building and its finished surface—natural, durable, and unlike any other material.


The Palette Of Earth

No two rammed earth walls are exactly alike.

Colour and texture are influenced by the natural materials and techniques used to create each wall, resulting in surfaces that feel rich, layered, and unique. While mineral pigments such as iron oxide can be used to influence colour, rammed earth is not intended to achieve the perfect uniformity of paint. Subtle variation is part of the beauty of the material.
