Building with the earth,
for the earth.
For us, rammed earth is more than a building material. It's a way we create homes that are healthier, quieter, more comfortable, and designed to last for generations.
Nearly two decades of building with rammed earth has reinforced something we've believed from the beginning: great homes are about more than performance alone. They're about creating places that feel calm, enduring, and deeply connected to the people who live in them.
Selected Projects
The projects featured here represent a small selection of our rammed earth work.
Together, these projects reflect our ongoing commitment to natural materials, thoughtful construction, and building places designed to endure.
From custom homes to landscape features, we work with rammed earth in a variety of ways. Explore how this remarkable material can become part of your next project.
What We Build with Rammed Earth
-
From the earliest conversations through construction, we design and build custom rammed earth homes that bring together thoughtful design, natural materials, and long-term performance. Every home is thoughtfully designed around the people who will live in it, creating spaces that are comfortable, resilient, and built to last.
-
We construct structural and architectural rammed earth walls for residential, commercial, and institutional projects.
Whether serving as a defining design feature or a primary building element, each wall is crafted with precision and care. -
Rammed earth extends beyond the home itself. We design and build custom retaining walls, garden walls, seating areas, landscape features, and architectural elements that bring warmth, texture, and permanence to a property.
-
For clients, architects, and project teams exploring rammed earth, we offer design support, feasibility guidance, and consultation to help integrate the material successfully into a project.
Why people choose rammed earth homes:
Built to last
One of the things we appreciate most about rammed earth is its simplicity.
Durable, low-maintenance, and naturally fire and pest resistant, it's a material that asks very little over its lifetime.
Rammed earth doesn't rely on finishes or coatings to maintain its character, and it ages gracefully with time.
For homeowners, that means fewer replacement cycles, less ongoing maintenance, and confidence that the home they've built is designed to endure for decades to come.
Exceptional comfort
They're remarkably quiet. Temperatures remain naturally consistent. The spaces feel calm, grounded, and comfortable.
That comfort comes from more than one thing. The thermal mass of the walls helps moderate indoor temperatures by absorbing and gradually releasing heat, while their natural hygroscopic properties help buffer changes in indoor humidity. Combined with thoughtful design and modern building science, the result is a home that remains comfortable through changing seasons.
Naturally unique
No two rammed earth walls are ever exactly alike.
Whether used as structure, enclosure, landscape, or architectural feature, each wall reflects the natural character of the materials from which it is made.
Variations in colour, texture, and layering emerge naturally during construction, creating surfaces that are rich in depth and impossible to replicate.
Mineral pigments, such as iron oxides, can be introduced to influence colour, but subtle variation remains part of the beauty of rammed earth.
Resilient by Design
Sustainable building isn't only about reducing environmental impact—it's also about creating homes that are prepared for the future.
As Ontario experiences increasingly unpredictable weather, many homeowners are looking for buildings that offer greater resilience alongside energy efficiency. Combined with modern building science, rammed earth helps create homes that remain comfortable, durable, and adaptable through changing conditions.
Rammed Earth FAQ
-
Yes. When properly designed and integrated into a high-performance building assembly, rammed earth can - and has for the past two decades - perform exceptionally well in Ontario's climate. Our projects have successfully weathered years of hot summers, harsh winters, and extended power outages.
-
Not at all.
Rammed earth can be incorporated as a feature wall, structural element, landscape feature, retaining wall, memorial, or integrated into a broader building system. -
One of the things we appreciate most about rammed earth is its simplicity.
Rather than relying on layers of manufactured finishes, rammed earth walls are formed from natural mineral-based materials and often remain exposed as both structure and finish. The result is a building material that is durable, low-maintenance and low waste.
Many people are initially drawn to rammed earth because of its environmental benefits, but we believe its greatest contribution may be its longevity. Homes built to last for generations require fewer replacement cycles, fewer renovations, and fewer resources over time.
-
Absolutely!
While many rammed earth projects are developed through our design-build process, we also regularly collaborate with architects, designers, engineers, and project teams interested in incorporating rammed earth into their work.
-
Rammed earth is remarkably versatile and can be incorporated into a wide range of projects.
Over the years, we've used rammed earth in custom homes, cottages, additions, retaining walls, memorials, public landscapes, and architectural features. It can serve as structure, enclosure, landscape, or art — sometimes all at once.
-
Yes, it can be.
Project costs vary depending on factors such as design, location, site conditions, and the extent to which rammed earth is incorporated into the project. In some cases, rammed earth may represent a premium compared to conventional wall systems. However, its important to understand that an exterior rammed earth wall replaces every layer of a conventional wall - framing, insulation, interior finish, exterior finish - and the result is a wall system that will far outperform any conventional build. When considering cost, we encourage clients to look beyond the initial construction budget and consider the broader life of the building. Durability, longevity, maintenance requirements, resilience, energy performance, and the experience of living within the space all contribute to the long-term value of a home.
